Fashion by Janet Van der Graaf

GOTHIC FASHION

Gothic fashion is the style of clothes that use the followers of the gothic subculture.

The clothes and the hair are usually black, and the lips are bright. The men and the women, use a pencil for the eyes and black nails. The styles are usually from punks, Victorian and Elizabethan.

This style appeared on the 80ths together with the gothic rock. Deadly paleness, black hair, top hats, leather clothes, religious, magic or deadly accessories (bone earrings, skulls...), leather boots, gloves...

Their aspect is usually horrible like a witch, they sometimes scare you

The gothic arrived like a way to protest against the disco ages from the 70ths and the top of the 80ths in the United Kingdom. They were against the pastel colours and the extravagance of the 80ths. It came principally from the influence of the horror literature and the horror cinema.

The horror literature from final of the XVIII century was the responsible of the meaning of the word. Now the word is related to the supernatural, the horror and the dark.

The gothic aspect of dark clothes, pale makeup and black hair are a modern version of the end Victorian period that sometimes is confused with heavy metal.
